What It's Really Like Moving From Santa Monica to Meridian, Idaho

A few years ago I was living in Santa Monica, working in luxury retail, and I would have told you I'd never leave Southern California. Today I'm a real estate agent in Meridian, Idaho, helping other people make the exact move I made. Here's what that transition actually looked like, past the highlight reel.

The cost-of-living conversation is real, but it's not the whole story

Yes, your money goes further here. A budget that gets you a condo in Santa Monica or a smaller home in the Valley can get you a single-family home with a yard in Meridian or Eagle. But the bigger shift for me wasn't the price per square foot — it was how much more space, both literally and mentally, that freed up. Less of my income going to rent or a mortgage meant more room to actually build a life instead of just paying for one.

The pace of life is different, and it takes adjusting to

Fifteen-plus years in luxury retail meant I was used to a certain rhythm — fast, polished, always "on." Idaho runs slower, and people mean it when they say hello to you in the grocery store line. It took me longer than I expected to stop treating that as small talk and start treating it as just... how people are here. That adjustment is real for most of my clients coming from California, Oregon, or Washington, and I don't think anyone should pretend it isn't.

You will miss specific things, not everything

I don't miss the traffic. I don't miss what a starter home costs. I do miss the ocean, and I miss certain restaurants I can't replace here. Being honest with yourself about which specific things you'll miss — rather than assuming you'll be homesick for "California" as a whole — makes the adjustment much easier.

What actually made it work

Having a clear-eyed local guide made the biggest difference for me, which is a big part of why I do this work now. Knowing which Treasure Valley cities fit which lifestyle — Meridian versus Eagle versus somewhere smaller like Star or Middleton — matters more than people expect before they've lived here.
